 Ashes series

(Ashes boxing day test 2017 at the MCG)

The Ashes cricket series is one of the oldest and most prestigious international cricket

contests between two great cricketing  nations,England and Australia.

The Test match series between these nations is held approximately every two years, and is one of sport's great rivalries. The series dates back to 1882 when Australia won its first-ever Test match on English soil. Since then, the Ashes has become a fiercely competitive and highly anticipated series, played biennially, alternately in England and Australia. The series consists of  five Test matches, and the winner of the series is awarded the Ashes urn.The term “The Ashes” came from a satirical obituary published in The Sporting Times, a British newspaper, right after Australia won the 1882 game at The Oval. It was Australia's first Test win on English soil. In the obituary, it said that English cricket had died and the body will be cremated and the ashes taken to Australia. These mythical ashes then became connected with the1882-1883 series that was played in Australia, before which the English captain Ivo Bligh had promised to “regain those ashes”English media then dubbed the tour the quest to regain the Ashes.

between eight and twelve teams.

Organised by Cricket Hong Kong, it is sanctioned by the International Cricket Council. The tournament is designed for television viewing, with rules and a venue that encourage aggressive batting and high scoring. Because every player (except the wicket-keeper) is required to bowl one over, the format suits all-rounders.All editions of the tournament have been held at the Kowloon Cricket Club except for the1996 and 1997 editions which were  held at the Hong Kong Stadium.

World Test  Championship

World Test Championship, organized by the International Cricket Council (ICC),

has been touted as the premier championship for Cricket, designed to boost interest in

Test cricket.

The idea for a Test Championship was first proposed by Ali Bacher and Clive

Lloyd at the ICC's conference in 1997. The latest incarnation of the World

Test Championship was announced by the ICC  in 2017.

The World Test Championship began on 1 August 2019, following the 50-overs World

Cup in 2019, and culminated with a  final in June 2021. Nine of the 12 Test-approved

countries (Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland will be excluded initially) were planned

play three home and three away Test match series over the two years that

count  towards the championship.

As many of the planned series were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic, the points

system to determine the championship table was  modified.

The top-two teams in April 2021 met two months later in the final.
